WordStudy: Jehovah “I AM”

In his book, The Hallelujah Factor, Jack Taylor reminds us that Jehovah “…is the most commonly used designation for God in the Bible. It is used more than 6,800 times! It is derived from the verb of being translated ‘to be’” (50).

1. Research the word Jehovah "I AM" in God’s Word.

2. Choose one of the scriptures you find and write it down; then, read it out loud.

3. In 1-2 sentences, write what you think the scripture means.

4. In 1-3 paragraphs, try to connect with the scripture. What did you think about as you read the passage? A life experiences (yours or someone else’s)? A life lesson? Another scripture or biblical truth? Something else?

5. Post your insights @ a comment to this blog (*).

(*) For those of you who are attending The Inheritance class at The Summit Church, post your insights @ TheCity on The Inheritance Bible Study Small Group link under “Group Discussion Topics” (WordStudy: Jehovah “I AM”). And remember, Heiresses @ TSC, at the end of our 9-week session , there will be a prize for the person who has posted the most WordStudy assigments on our discussion board.

  1. Well, this was a hard word study for me for some reason. "I AM." I followed a path from Exodus 3:14 to Exodus 6:3 to John 8:58. John 8:58 states, "Jesus said to them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.'" I think this puts it all into perspective for me this week. Before Abraham WAS born, Jesus IS! This is an absolute existence, a FOR SURE existence of Jesus (God/Jehovah). This is more than a SIMPLE existence! It is an ACTIVE existence, a POWERFUL existence! An existence that encompasses EVERYTHING that moves and breathes! It is an existence that I cannot afford to miss. "I AM." Those two words seem to resonate, don't they? I bet they did with Moses, too, as they were spoken to him by God/Jehovah!

  2. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I thought everyone was going to wimp out on me this week. I guess this might have been a tricky WordStudy.

I love this Word though. A while back, when I lived in Fort Worth, Jack Taylor served as the interim pastor at our church. He taught a series on "praise"--which resulted in his book, The Hallelujah Factor. Anyway, one of the main things I learned during that time was about the the word "Jehovah--I AM."

I went through the Names of God during that series for the first time. I saw that God revealed Himself to Israel throughout the Old Testament by His Name--Jehovah.

As a matter, I think I'll post something about that on one of my other blogs, the BLESSED DiaBlog (http://blog.karenjordan.net)--so, watch for it!
