WordStudy: Promised Land

“Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them.Be strong and very courageous…” (Joshua 1:6).

In our study this week, we considered what it will take to “possess our promised land.” So, what does God’s Word say about our “promised land”?

1. Research the words “promised land” in God’s Word.

2. Choose one of the scriptures you find and write it down; then, read it out loud.

3. In 1-2 sentences, write what you think the scripture means.

4. In 1-3 paragraphs, try to connect with the scripture. What did you think about as you read the passage? A life experiences (yours or someone else’s)? A life lesson? Another scripture or biblical truth? Something else?

5. Post your insights @ a comment to this blog (*).

(*) For those of you who are attending The Inheritance class at The Summit Church, post your insights @ TheCity on The Inheritance Bible Study Small Group link under “Group Discussion Topics” (WordStudy: Promised Land). And remember, Heiresses @ TSC, at the end of our 9-week session , there will be a prize for the person who has posted the most WordStudy assigments on our discussion board.

  1. I posted my comments/thoughts on this Word Study over the weekend. I know I was late on getting it done. Probably would fail your writing class! However, I don't know what happened to it! I hit the "Post Comment" button, and it zipped away...never to be seen from again! I started working on the new word, "Chosen" after that, but have not finished that study. I am hurrying to catch up! Sorry about "The Promised Land!"

  2. Promised Land
The “promised-land” always made me think of the “land of milk and honey”. It sounds so wonderful like the Garden of Eden, where everything is perfect and we could just walk in and receive immediate rest, joy and blessings. Yet as I read in Joshua about the Israelites moving to take the promised-land, I see another type of picture. One like Beth said last week, in which we have to fight to take our inheritance.
Joshua 1:6 says, “Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them.” In Joshua 3:5, Joshua told the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you.” First they took a step of faith by walking into the Jordan River at flood stage. Next they circumcised every male of military age and lay around vulnerable to attack till they healed. Then God gave them victory over Jericho, then failure Ai because of sin of one man in their camp. After stoned him to death they took Ai successfully. They built an alter to the Lord and renewed their covenant with the Lord, then they made a covenant with Gibeonites but ”…they did not inquire of the Lord.”9:14 Lastly they fought to take their land, their promised land; for the next 8 years or so before they could rest and enjoy it.
What I see about the whole journey is that even though it was up and down like our walk sometimes; God continued to lead them, encourage them and discipline them through it all. Thank God he is helping me in the same way as I take the courage to fight for my inheritance and my promised land.
