WordStudy: Inheritance

In our introductory session, Beth Moore stated that the word “inheritance" or some form of it (heritage, inherit, etc.) appears over 300 times in the Bible. So, here’s your homework assignment for the first week.

1. Do a word search in God’s Word on the topic of “inheritance” or some form of that word (i.e. heritage, inherit, etc.).

2. Pick one scripture that you find during your search and write in 1-2 sentences about what you think that scriptures means (in your own words).

3. Now, in 2-3 paragraphs, write how you connected to the passage you read—what came to your mind while you were reading it (a personal experience, an example of that truth, an issue for discussion, etc.).

4. Post your answers on our group's discussion board in The City (for those of you who are attending The Inheritance class at The Summit) as a reply to this assignment—“WordStudy: Inheritance.” If you're joining us online, post your reply as a comment to this post (see my sample comment below).

At the end of our 9-week session (for those of you who are attending The Inheritance class at The Summit), there will be a prize for the person who has posted the most WordStudy assigments on our discussion board. And our prize will be more that a pack of gum!

  1. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for me, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward” (Colossians 3:23-24 NIV).

My motivation for service should be based on what Christ has done for me, not on what I can do for Him. And my focus should be on my blessings in Christ, not on what I will receive from others—praise, acceptance, rewards, power, etc.

Growing up in a traditional Southern Baptist church, I learned to perform for acceptance. My motivation for service was often based on pressure from others or my need for their approval. One day, I realized that God accepted me based on what Christ did for me, not because of what I could do for Him.

It’s still a struggle for me to discern my motivation for service at times, because that still means resisting the pressure from others to perform for their acceptance or approval (Yes, there’s still peer pressure for those of us over 50! ). So…I’m still learning to seek God first before I commit to anything!

  2. "For the Lord will not abandon His people, Nor will he forsake His inheritance" (Psalm 94:14).

What a great promise! What a wonderful truth! I am so glad that God will not abandon me. I am so glad that He will not take away my inheritance! Sometimes, however, it is difficult for me to accept the promise of that inheritance.

I know about the promises of God. I KNOW He keeps his promises. I have been taught them over the years, I have read them in the Bible, they have been preached to me (and at me!), I have seen them played out in lives of others, and I have witnessed them in my life. Why, then, do I not just receive that promise of inheritance readily? Well, I know that many times, if not all the time, it is due to my straying from studying my Bible, not spending time in conversation with God (more listening than talking!), and in not doing what He requires of me.

God has every right to, but I am certainly glad that He will not "abandon" me, or "forsake" my inheritance. I thank Him for that promise! I pray I can be accepting of these promises.

  4. Amen, sister--I totally agree! I'm thankful I don't get what I deserve either. And I'm grateful for the spiritual inheritance that was purchased for me on the cross. And I'm also grateful that God promised to never leave me or forsake me, even when I have often abandoned and forsaken Him.

Thank you so much for your post, Bibbie. You win the prize for being the first to respond to this WordStudy. Blessings!
