WordStudy: Thanksgiving

"Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song" (Psalm 95:2 NIV).

In honor of our Thanksgiving this week, we will focus our WordStudy on the word "thanksgiving" (i.e. thankful or thanks).

What comes to your mind when you think about Thanksgiving? Have you ever checked out the word "thanksgiving" (thankful or thanks) in the scriptures.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes this week to ponder this subject as you meditate on God’s Word in preparation for your Thanksgiving celebration.

1. Research the word "thanksgiving" in God's Word.

2. Choose one of the scriptures you find and write it down; then, read it out loud.

3. In 1-2 sentences, write what you think the scripture means.

4. In 1-3 paragraphs, try to connect with the scripture. What did you think about as you read the passage? A life experiences (yours or someone else's)? A life lesson? Another scripture or biblical truth? Something else?

5. Post your insights as a comment to this blog (*).

  1. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (Philippians 4:6 NIV).

I seem to be drawn to this scripture a lot. It reminds me that God doesn't want me to be anxious about "anything." But how do I "not be anxious"?

I believe the answer may be found right here in this same verse. It tells me that I can take "everything" to the Lord. But often I need a reality check with my attitude when I go to the Lord in prayer. Yet, as I acknowledge my fears, doubts, unbelief, anger, frustration..., He promises to tranforms my anxious state--my troubled heart and mind--and give me His peace.

May "the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, ...guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" ( Philippians 4:7) as you give the Lord all of your anxieties and focus on all of your blessings this Thanksgiving season.

    Happy Thanksgiving
